Rural SL Man Escapes Injury When Riding Mower Catches Fire

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A rural Spirit Lake man escaped injury this (Monday) afternoon when a riding lawn mower he was operating went up in flames.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief David Kollasch tells KUOO news firefighters were called to 16911 169th Street in the Arthur Heights area around 3:22 p.m. Kollasch says Scott Greer was operating a John Deer riding mower when some leaves apparently got caught underneath, overheated and started on fire. Greer managed to get off the mower unharmed. He tried unsuccessfully to put it out with a fire extinguisher.

In spite of a lot of dry leaves and a stiff wind, Kollasch says firefighters were able to contain the fire to the mower, which was destroyed.

Spirit Lake firefighters were on the scene about 20 minutes.
