Milford Council Hears Requests To Operate Golf Carts On City Streets

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– The operation of golf carts on city streets was a topic of discussion at Monday’s Milford city council meeting.

Iowa Code allows golf carts to be driven on city streets as long as they aren’t primary roads, such as a highway. Operators are also required to have a valid driver’s license.

The city has received requests from two people who want to drive the carts on city streets, but neither currently has a valid driver’s license. They were told that until they get a license, they are barred from operating the carts on city streets under state law.

Even though state law allows golf carts to be operated on city streets as long as certain provisions are met, some Milford city council members are concerned over liability and other factors. They directed City Administrator Brian Reed and the City Attorney to draw up an application for a city permit that would have to be renewed annually. Among other things it would require operators to show proof of insurance and a current, valid driver’s license; along with a specific route of travel.

On another matter, the Milford city council voted three-to-one to re-join the SHIELD safety training organization. The city had been involved in the consortium once before but dropped out over concerns of lack of notification of meetings, among other things. Reed told the council the concerns have since been addressed.

Councilman Keith Feller cast the lone no vote. Councilman Don Gude was absent.
