Temporary 911 Downgrade Affects 856, 839 Prefixes

November 22, 2014

(Jackson, Mn.)– Residents along the Iowa/Minnesota border will notice some changes if they have to call 911.

Jackson County Sheriff Roger Hawkinson says it has to do with contract negotiations between telephone companies and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. As a result, Hawkinson says residents with an 856 or 839 prefix have had their 911 service temporarily downgraded to level one–meaning a location and phone number won’t automatically be given to the sheriff’s dispatcher. He says residents affected will have to have that information handy.

Hawkinson says the issue should be resolved in 30 to 60 days.
