Most Area Lakes Sporting Ice Cover

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– With the exception of the deeper portions of West Lake Okoboji, the Iowa Great Lakes are sporting some ice cover. But in most cases officials say it isn’t safe to be venturing out onto yet.

Gary Owen of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says conditions early on were good for making ice. But he says those conditions have deterioriated somewhat since last Saturday’s snowfall. Owen says that’s acting as an insulator and has slowed the development somewhat.

Ice on some of the bays and in the area of the harbor on West Lake Okoboji is reportedly up to four to five inches thick. But it’s much less than that in other places. And there are still some areas of open water.
