(Worthington)– Production resumed Wednesday at the Swift and Company meatpacking plant in Worthington after an ammonia leak prompted a temporary shutdown.
Emergency crews were called to the plant around 10:00 p.m. Tuesday and several people were transported to area hospitals.
Worthington Regional Hospital treated 25 people suffering from exposure to ammonia; nine others were taken to a Luverne hospital. Most of the 34 patients had been treated and released by Wednesday morning.
A Swift representative says a cooler valve failed and caused the leak. The kill floor was immediately evacuated.
