Alcohol Ban Considered For Gull Point Beach

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– A popular state park beach in the Iowa Great Lakes area may become off-limits for alcohol.

The DNR is considering a proposal that would ban alcohol from the beach at Gull Point State Park on West Lake Okoboji, as well as Lake McBride State Park near Iowa City.

DNR officials say beer-drinking college students have pushed many families out of the parks.
State Parks Bureau Chief Kevin Szcodronski says drinking in the parks is getting out of hand. He says they come with “cooler after cooler, and they drink and drink.”

He says officers ticket underage drinkers and those guilty of public intoxication, but the litter and rowdiness continue.

The ban would have to be approved by the Natural Resource Commission after a public hearing process.
