(Spirit Lake)– Add Spirit Lake to the list of school districts in the area forced to make significant budget cuts for the upcoming year.
While declining enrollment has been the factor in most cases, for Spirit Lake interim Superintedent Doug Latham says it was more of a case of the district spending beyond its authority the last several years. As a result, he says the district is now looking at trimming anywhere from 600-thousand to a million dollars out of the upcoming year’s budget.
The school board held a work session on the budget Thursday, but Latham says as of right now no specific areas have been identified for cuts. He says “everything is on the table”…unquote.
The board on Monday suspended its search for a new superintendent siting some recent issues that they had been made aware of. KUOO news has learned the budget matter is atleast one of those issues.
