(Spencer)– Military officials have continued their investigation of the death of a 20-year-old Iowa soldier who died in Iraq during a “non-combat incident”.
The United States Forces-Iraq offered no new details Saturday in the death of Spc. Christopher Opat. He died last Tuesday from injuries in a non-combat incident in Baquah, Iraq.
Opant’s family issued a statement through the Iowa National Gurad on Saturday. They describe Opat as a gentle person with a adventurous spirit who was a loving son, brother and uncle.
His family says he grew up in Lime Springs, Iowa and went to Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg before enlisting in the military in Spencer.
Funeral services are pending through Conway Funeral Home in Cresco.
OPat is survived by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.
