Explosion Rocks Sanborn Elevator

November 22, 2014

(Sanborn)– Officials are trying to figure out what sparked a grain dust explosion today (Thursday) that damaged an elevator in Sanborn.

Firefighters, emergency responders and law enforcement officers were called to the Farmer’s Co-op Society grain elevator in Sanborn around 2:30 p.m.

Authorities say the blast took place in one of the elevator’s silos. The force of the explosion reportedly blew debris out of some windows about 50 feet.

They say there was a fire which was quickly extinguished. But witnesses reported seeing some smoke coming out of the silo once in awhile.

Authorities say all of the elevator’s employees were accounted for and there were no injuries.

In addition to trying to pinpoint a cause for the explosion, investigators are also trying to determine the silo’s structural integrity.
