AP Council Amends Zoning Ordinance To Allow Dorms As Special Exception Use

November 22, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– Meeting in special session, the Arnolds Park city council Thursday approved a Planning and Zoning Commission recommendation to amend the city’s zoning ordinance to allow dormitories or residence halls as a special exception use in all commercial districts.

Scott Pyle, General Manager of the Arnolds Park Amusement Park, requested the change on behalf of the board of directors of Historic Arnolds Park, Incorporated. Pyle says they’re thinking about purchasing a house adjacent to the park and converting it into a dormitory to house some foreign students who will once again be working at the park this season.

Pyle says 24 to 26 foreign students from Bulgaria, Macedonia and Russia will be working at the park this coming season…about double the number of last year.

Pyle says finding a place to house the students was a real challenge last year. He says they had to pay as much as a thousand dollars a month for rent.

The Arnolds Park Board of Adjustment will hold a public hearing on Historic Arnolds Park, Incorporated’s proposal at their meeting May 5th.
