Terril, Everly Dealt Setback In Efforts To Establish Municipal Utilities

November 22, 2014

(Des Moines)– Efforts by some local communities to establish municipal electric utilities have been dealt a serious setback by the Iowa Utilities Board.

In a decision issued today (Tuesday), the IUB rejected, by unanimous decision, a consolidated petition by five cities…including Everly and Terril…to municipalize their electric assets of Interstate Power and Light…a subsidiary of Alliant Energy…and provide their own electric service.

In its ruling, the IUB stated municipalization would not be in the public interest due to the high costs that would be incurred.

The cities petitioned the IUB in June, 2006 for certificates of authority to furnish their own electric service.

Titonka filed a similar petition, but later withdrew.
