SL Council Sends Liaison Officer Proposal Back For More Negotiation With School

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A proposal between the city of Spirit Lake and the school district for a liaison officer through the city’s Police Department is headed back to the table for more negotiation.

The city council Tuesday directed Police Chief Jeff Hanson and the city’s Public Safety Committee to sit down again with school officials to re-negotiate a couple of points in the proposal.

Councilman Steve Balm raised the concerns, saying he wants an agreement that would be longer than just the one year that’s currently proposed. Balm says it wouldn’t be worth it for the city to hire an additional officer that may be here only a year.

He’s also concerned over the city picking up most of the tab for funding the officer. The school board, which approved the proposal at its meeting Monday, attached a provision stating it’s funding would not exceed 20-thousand dollars a year.
