(Spencer)– The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says a Special Traffic Enforcement Program, or STEP, that recently concluded was a big success.
The latest wave was held over the Memorial Day weekend and ended this past Monday.
Sheriff Randy Krukow says deputies conducted a post seatbelt survey in the county on Tuesday. Of the vehicles surveyed, he says 96 percent of drivers and front-seat passengers were in compliance. Krukow says those results were the highest seatbelt usage percentage on record since his office started participating in the STEP program in 1996.
Over the third wave of the program, Krukow says the Clay County Sheriff’s Office wrote 185 citations. Of those, only five were for seatbelt violations. He says 152 warnings were issued, and only two of those were for seatbelt usage.
