SL School Bd Approves Budget Amendment & Transition Plan

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake school board Monday adopted a budget amendment for the current fiscal year’s budget following a public hearing. The support services part of the budget was adjusted from $3,812,000 to $4,500,000. That portion of the budget reflects utility and fuel costs. The other portion of the budget being amended is titled “other expenditures”. It covers tax revenue bonds used in the construction of the Sami Center. It was adjusted from $6,927,142 to $10,000,000. Superintendent Doug Latham says the changes will have no impact on taxes to be paid in the fiscal year ending June 30th, 2008.

In other business, the board adopted a transition plan to make terms of board members consistent with action taken in the last session of the Iowa Legislature, moving from three-year to four-year terms every-other year for school board members. Under the proposal, the position currently held by Cliff Garvey comes up for election this September. It would be on the ballot for a three-year term, expiring in 2011. Board members Scott Wicks and Todd Hummel would see their terms come up in 2009, when the four-year term starts. Ann Goerss and Beth Will’s terms end in 2010. One year would be added to their terms, meaning they would conclude in 2011. Latham says the district’s transition plan has been approved by the Secretary of State’s Office.
