SL Reconsiders Vicious Animal Ordinance

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The city of Spirit Lake is re-visiting its vicious animals ordinance.

The current ordinance is breed-specific, singling out pitbulls and staffordshire terriers, among others, as being vicious.

But some say any breed of dog can become vicious under the right circumstances. And councilman Clyde Ihrke says that’s one of the reasons why the council is looking at possible changes. A couple with a pitbull also recently moved into town.

The council Tuesday directed City Attorney Earl Maahs to draft a revised ordinance that would do away with naming specific breeds and instead put more of an emphasis on control of ALL animals.
