New Iowa law Increases Fines For Violations In Road Construction Zones

November 22, 2014

(Ames)– A new law goes in effect today (Tues., July 1st) in Iowa that increases fines for speeding in road construction zones.

Under the new law, penalties for speeding in a work zone are:

*$150 for up to 10 miles-per-hour over the posted speed limit

*$300 for speeds from 11 through 20 mph over the posted speed limit

*$500 for speeds from 21 through 25 mph over the posted speed limit

*$1,000 for speeds in excess of 26 mph over the posted speed limit

Under current law, scheduled fines for moving traffic violations committed in a work zone are doubled. Under the bill, doubled fines will continue to apply for moving violations other than speeding.

The law applies to all state, county and city public roads.

The Iowa DOT will be replacing the existing “Fines Double In Construction Zones, Road Workers Give ‘Em A Brake” signs currently lcoated along state highways with new ones.
