School Districts Warned To Slash Budgets

November 22, 2014

(Des Moines)– State officials have told 60 school districts in serious financial trouble to cut their budgets. That’s at a time when schools can be shut down for operating over budget.

Iowa Department of Education officials have sent letters to school districts on track to overspend in the upcoming school year. Most of them are small school districts. But the list includes larger districts such as Urbandale and Dubuque.

State records show 17 districts overspent their budgets in the 2006-07 school year. 22 were expected to overspend in 2007-08 and 60 are on the list for 2008-09, including Okoboji and Spirit Lake.
