Divers Credited For Saving Life On West Lake Okoboji

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– Two divers are being credited for their heroics Saturday on West Lake Okoboji.

Authorities say Dr. Mark Voss of Spirit Lake and Kevin Vaughn of Aberdeen, South Dakota, had just completed a dive and were putting their equipment away when they noticed two young men were in trouble. They called 911 and then went into the water to assist the victims. One was clearly exhausted and unable to swim. The divers assisted that man to shore. The other had slipped below the surface. He was found by another diver and was brought to the Lakes Area Fire Boat. Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire and Rescue transported the victim to shore where paramedics tended to him. Both victims were taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare; one was transferred in critical condition to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Authorities say one victim is believed to have been submerged about 15 minutes.

The names of the victims weren’t being released.

The incident took place around 5:45 p.m. Saturday.
