(Okoboji)– The man who heads one of the biggest chains of grocery stores in Iowa is challenging the state’s lawmakers to pass a better bottle bill.
Having said that, Ric Jurgens, Chairman and CEO of Hy-Vee, says contrary to what many believe, the grocery industry “will not support a repeal of the bottle bill” until there’s something better than the bottle bill to improve the state’s environment. He says such a measure needs to include more recycling, tighter restrictions on littering, and so on.
In addition to visiting with legislative leaders on the issue, Jurgens says he’s also visited with DNR Director Rich Leopold. Jurgens says his visit with Leopold was encouraging in that he feels he’ll come up with something constructive that will make a difference on the environment.
Jurgens made his comments last week during the “Grow Iowa Economy” speaker series at the Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji.
