Efforts Underway To Build Indoor Ice Rink In Lakes Area

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– A group that oversees a youth hockey program in the Iowa Great Lakes is advocating the construction of an indoor ice rink.

Representatives of the Iowa Great Lakes Hockey Association want to build a two and-a-half million dollar 30-thousand square foot building that would house such a facility and related equipment.

They say hockey tournaments and other events at the facility would bring some big bucks to the lakes during the off-season–the winter months.

Representatives of the association were at Monday’s Milford city council meeting asking if the city would be willing to host such a facility. The council took no action, but agreed to form a committee to study such a proposal. Mayor Virg Wahlman feels such a facility would be a good tie-in with the Boji Junction development on the city’s north side.

Association members say Milford would be a central location for an indoor ice facility as it’s between the lakes and Spencer, from where they’re also drawing youth to play hockey.
