SL Council Approves Zoning Changes For Proposed Development

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Plans for a major development on the southwest side of Spirit Lake are a step closer to reality.

The city council Tuesday unanimously approved recommendations from the Planning and Zoning Commission to go ahead with zoning changes and revisions to the city’s zoning ordinance to accomodate the proposed development.

Developers Marty and Alex Benskin and Glen Maddox, Junior want to build an 18-hole golf course, clubhouse, hotel and housing consisting of 600 lots and condominiums. It would be located between Highway 71 and Hill Avenue and south of 41st Street and north of Stakeout Road.

Brad Beck spoke on behalf of the developers, who were unable to attend Tuesday’s meeting due to the weather. Beck emphasized the fact the developers are not requesting any financial assistance from the city, saying infrastructure and other needs will be privately financed.

Beck says the development will be built in stages. He says if things go accordingly, a grand opening for the golf course could be held in May 2011.
