Faulty Furnace Cited For Okoboji Gas Leak

November 22, 2014

(Okoboji)– A faulty furnace resulted in a natural gas leak in a house in Okoboji Saturday.

Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire Chief Chris Yungbluth tells KUOO news firefighters were called to 2307 Lakeshore Drive after getting a report from the homeowner of a strong smell of natural gas.

Upon arriving firefighters shut off gas to the home at the meter. Officials with Black Hills Energy arrived and upon investigating determined that a furnace in the lower level of the home was malfunctioning, causing natural gas to leak into the home.

Homeowner Becky Johnson told authorities she was checking on the summer residence to make sure everything was okay when she noted the strong odor of gas.

Firefighters were on the scene a little more than an hour. No injuries were reported and Yungbluth says no evacuations were needed of neighboring homes.
