November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A local project designed to help children get to school safely has been awarded funding by the Iowa Transportation Commission.

The “Safe Routes To School Program” was created with federal transportation funds in 2005 with the purpose of increasing the number of children safely walking and biking to school.

Funding is available to cities, counties, state agencies, nonprofit groups and public and private schools through an annual application-based program.

Locally, the Spencer School Sidewalk Improvement Project was awarded 71,538-dollars.

A total of 1.7 million dollars was awarded to 18 different Safe Routes To School Program projects.
