(Spirit Lake)– Local officials are warning people to take the proper precautions if venturing out into the extreme cold.
For starters, they say you should dress in several layers of clothing and make sure any exposed areas are covered to prevent frostbite.
Those with chronic health conditions should avoid the extreme cold altogether.
Local officials also urge people to keep an eye on the elderly to make sure they’re doing okay during the cold snap.
The temperature this morning in Spirit Lake bottomed out at 24 degrees below zero…falling just short of the record of 25 below set back in 1994.
Some residents in low-lying areas reported even colder temperatures. There was one report of 30 below from the Prairie Lake area east of Arnolds Park.
