(Spirit Lake)– Fire has destroyed a maintenance building at Cutty’s Resort on the northwest side of West Lake Okoboji.
The Spirit Lake Fire Department was called to the scene shortly after 1:00 p.m. this (Monday) afternoon and immediately called for mutual aid assistance from Lake Park and Milford to help haul water. Fire Departments from Superior and Arnolds Park/Okoboji were also summoned.
Assistant Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly tells KUOO news the building was already engulfed when firefighters arrived and was totally destroyed.
Daly says someone had been in the building about a half hour before the blaze was reported, but had left by the time the fire broke out.
He says the State Fire Marshal has been called to determine a cause.
No firefighters were injured battling the blaze. A Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance stood by on the scene as a precaution.
Daly says getting water to battle the blaze was a real challenge. Firefighters were finally able to access water from a nearby pond, but had to drill through ice that was more than a foot thick.
Firefighters from neighboring departments left the scene around 4:00 p.m., but Spirit Lake firefighters remained, keeping an eye out for any hot spots.
