Northey Considers Run For Governor

November 22, 2014

(Johnston)– Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey says he’ll decide by next summer whether to challenge incumbent democratic Governor Chet Culver in 2010.

The republican from Spirit Lake acknowledges it would be hard to defeat Culver but says the souring economy and state budget problems could improve his chances if he opts to run for Governor.

Northey, who was speaking Friday during a taping of Iowa Public Television’s “Iowa Press” program, says republicans also could be helped by historical trends that show the party not in control of the White House usually fares well in mid-term elections.

Culver has made clear his intentions to seek re-election, but he hasn’t officially announced his plans.
