Ice Jams, Melting Snow Causing Flooding In Some Areas

November 22, 2014

(Undated)– Run-off from melting snow and ice jams are resulting in flooding along some area rivers.

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has issued flood warnings for the Little River near Milford, Spencer and Cherokee and for the Ocheyedan River near Spencer.

Officials say one known ice jam on the Little Sioux River between Cherokee and Correctionville is causing flooding in the Cherokee area. The Little Sioux was nearly four feet over flood stage there this (Wednesday) morning.

Only minor flooding is being reported upstream. The Little Sioux was slightly more than a foot over flood stage in Spencer and west of Milford.

Officials warn the situation could worsen locally on the Little Sioux if additional ice jams form. At that point they say fluctuations of up to several feet could occur.
