(Brookings, S.D.)– The city council in Brookings, South Dakota has directed the City Manager and City Attorney to write an ordinance regulating cage fighting, also known as ultimate fighting or mixed martial arts.
One city councilor had asked other councilors about banning it from the city’s events center and other city facilities. Rather than go that far, councilors decided they wanted some control over it.
City Manager Jeff Weldon says he may not like the sport but it’s a money maker when held in the Swiftel Center and draws people who spend money in hotels, restaurants and other businesses in town.
As we reported previously, the city of Spirit Lake is also looking into the possibility of regulating cage fighting…in light of a call from others who say it should be banned altogether from the city. Similar to what’s happened in Brookings, the Spirit Lake city council last week directed the City Attorney here to draw up a proposed ordinance with regulations in it.
