Cage Fighting Controversy Again Confronts SL City Council

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– It was round two for the Spirit Lake city council Tuesday and the issue over cage fighting.

City Attorney Earl Maahs presented the council with a proposed ordinance that would heavily regulate cage fighting in the city. Instead of debating what should and should not be included Tuesday, Maahs directed each council member to review the proposed ordinance and to highlight which parts of it to keep, what should be deleted, and what should be added.

Dan Lewis, a cage fighter promoter, was again present at Tuesday’s meeting. He told the council he was surprised over the scope of the regulations and questioned whether the city has the resources to enforce them.

The council also heard yet another round of arguments on both sides of the cage fighting argument…from those wanting it banned altogether to those who say the city shouldn’t legislate what types of venues people go to.

No timeframe was given as to when the council may have a final draft of regulations to consider.
