SL Council Discusses Semi Parking; National Flood Insurance Program

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday deferred the first reading of a proposed ordinance that would allow the parking of a semi’s in general commercial areas of the city on a conditional use basis only.

Councilman Steve Balm questioned the fairness over the proposed ordinance. Fellow councilmen said they want to hear the rationale behind the proposed ordinance and requested a member of the Planning and Zoning commission be at the next regular council meeting.

The council also Tuesday discussed but took no action on the possibility of the city re-entering the National Flood Insurance program. Public Works Director Dwight Dohlman told the council three areas of the city have been identified by DNR officials as being in the flood plain. They include North Hill Avenue near some storage buidlings and the Gingham Inn; the west part of town including the KUOO studios; and an area in the southeast part of town between 28th Street and a cul de sac on Adams avenue.

The council took no action, but directed city staff to gather more information.

Also Tuesday, the Spirit Lake city council voted to sever some property that had been annexed previously into the city for the golf course resort development; and they approved a couple of new fees for services.
