(Undated)– Representatives of Iowa’s Water and Land Legacy are conducting a statewide tour this month to draw attention to a little known question that will appear on the ballot with the November 2nd General Election.
It’s on a constitutional amendment that would create a dedicated trust fund to protect and enhance water quality and natural areas throughout the state, including parks, trails, and fish and wildlife habitat, along with conserving Iowa agricultural soils.
Supporters of the amendment say it could provide $150 million in new funding for natural resources each year, including $100 million for water quality, improved watershed planning, restoring wetlands to protect against future flooding and voluntary conservation incentives for farmers for clean water and soil conservation.
The organization has scheduled a number of events throughout the state in coming weeks to promote the issue. One is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 22nd at Jemmerson Slough in Spirit Lake. Other events are planned locally for Emmetsburg, Estherville and Spencer.
Iowa’s Water and Land Legacy supporters consist of a bipartisan, broad-based coalition representing sportsmen, conservationists, business leaders, farmers, the YMCA and first responders.
