Milford Council Hears Engineer’s Report On Proposed 6th Street, “H” Avenue Projects

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– The Milford city council Monday evening reviewed a feasibility report from the city’s engineer regarding proposed improvements to portions of Sixth Street and “H” Avenue. The work would consist of upsizing some water and sanitary and storm sewer lines; new curb and gutter and re-surfacing the streets.

Preliminary estimates put the 6th Street price tag at roughly $712,000 with “H” Avenue coming in at about 1.6 million dollars.

The council is looking at several possible options for funding the project, including the possibility of assessing nearby property owners. The city engineer told the council that $178,000 of the 6th Street work could be assessed and that about $400,000 of the “H” Avenue project could be picked up by property owners on that street.

Following some additional discussion, the council decided to hold a joint meeting with the city’s Utility Board to discuss the matter further. That meeting is tentatively set for Monday, November 15th.

In other business, the council appointed John Shaw to fill a vacancy on the city’s Airport Commission left open with the recent passing of David Stein, Sr.; they approved the appointment of Eric Stohl to represent the city on the Dickinson County Water Quality Commission; and they accepted with regret the resignation of George Wallace as the city’s Zoning Administrator. They approved the appointment of Nick Jones to the position, contingent on wages being finalized.

There was also discussion on the upcoming referendum on the hotel/motel tax and how it should be promoted. City Administrator Matt Skaret says the tax could generate $35,000-$40,000 a year for the city, which would be used for tourism-related purposes.

Milford residents will vote on the measure November 8th, 2011.
