(Spencer)– One person was sent to the hospital Tuesday when a car and a semi collided at the north “Y”, or the junction of Highways 18 and 71 on the north edge of Spencer.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 82-year-old Elmer Dykstra of Spencer was driving a 1997 Buick northbound on Highway 71 and was slowing to make a left turn onto Highway 18. Deputies say Dykstra went through a stop sign in the median and was crossing the southbound lanes of Highway 71 when he collided with a southbound semi driven by 60-year-old Richard Gray of Dickens.
Authorities say Gray saw Dykstra travel across his lane and attempted to brake and swerved to his right, but was unable to avoid the collision.
Dykstra was taken to Spencer Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. No injuries were reported to Gray.
Dykstra was cited for failure to yield upon entering a through highway.
Functional damage was reported to the 1995 Peterbilt semi tractor driven by Gray and owned by Spencer Truck Line; the car driven by Dykstra was totaled.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Spencer Police Department, Spencer Hospital ambulance and the Fostoria Fire Department and First Responders.
The collision took place around 1:20 p.m.
