I-Walk Project Rescheduled

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A Safe Routes to School project in Spencer that was recently postponed due to inclement weather has been rescheduled for next month.

The I-Walk project is now scheduled for 9:00 a.m. June 8th at Johnson Elementary School.

The project evaluates various routes used by children who walk or ride bike to and from the school. It’s funded through a grant awarded to the Iowa Department of Public Health by the Iowa Department of Transportation.

As we reported previously, volunteers in the I-Walk project use GPS equipment to map out the various routes and document any barriers or opportunities. Recommendations will be reported to the community in the fall and will be used by the school district and the community to come up with ways to improve safety along the routes.

Volunteers are needed to help out with the June 8th project. Anyone interested should contact Alison Simpson at (712) 580-7787 or Lois Stillman at 264-6505.

Training on usage of GPS equipment will be provided.
