Protective Associations, DNR, Fishing Groups Looking Into Electric Fish Barrier For Lower Gar Outlet

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– Lakes area protective associations and fishing groups, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and others are looking into the possibility of installing an electric fish barrier at the Lower Gar Outlet. Lakes area resident Phil Petersen says it would be the first line of defense in keeping a voracious invasive species out of the Iowa Great Lakes…Click here for sound bite

Petersen says doing that, though, won’t be cheap…Click here for sound bite

And Petersen says they don’t have much time to do that…Click here for sound bite

Petersen says the barrier would likely be similar to one installed on Heron Lake several years ago.

He’s hopeful, though, they aren’t already too late. While Big Head Carp, also an invasive species, have already been found in East Lake Okoboji, officials say so far, there have been no confirmed sitings of Silver Asian Carp in any of the Iowa Great Lakes. The fish leap out of the water and have been known to seriously injure boaters and water skiers.
