Early duck season underway

November 22, 2014

Spirit Lake –

Iowa’s early duck season is underway, with hunters facing some challenging conditions due to the drought.

The Iowa DNR says most area wetlands are dry due to the drought, which will concentrate ducks – and hunters – on the few wetlands that still have water.

DNR officials say hunters may turn to hunting rivers to avoid crowds, and note that low stream levels are creating small pools which resemble wetlands and may be attractive to ducks.

The early season runs from Sept. 22 through Sept. 26, 2012, while the late duck season begins on Oct. 13 in the north zone.
