Our series on lakes area cities this week focuses on Okoboji, which has carried out a series of such projects in recent years. KUOO’s John Adams Sr. visits with City Administrator Dennis Daly…( click here for actuality .) Dennis, first of all let’s talk about your Mayor, your council, who the members are, and how often you meet and where you meet. “Our Mayor is Mary Vanderwoude and we have five council members: Sue Larson, Jerry Robinson, Neal Christensen, Jim Hentges and Jim Delperdang. We meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month at city hall at 6:00 p.m.”
What are some of Okoboji’s city projects the past several years that you feel have brought pride to the city? “Well one that comes to mind is the Nichols Avenue Street and Drainage Project. We did all new street and curb and gutter. We did several side streets with that project. The thing we’re most proud of with this project is we installed 14 new rain gardens to further enhance water quality in the lakes area here.”
So what’s on the docket for city improvements or projects for the upcoming year? “Well we have four new drainage projects that we’ve approved to move forward with all on Lakeshore Drive. These all involve private property but we contribute heavily to the drainage and again it’s all the silt and stuff going into the lake. So we’re going to do four new drainage projects with rain gardens in each one of those locations to further enhance water quality in the lakes area.”
