Dickinson County Supervisors Turn Down Request For Support For Freedom Rock Project

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)—The Dickinson county board of supervisors Tuesday heard another plea for funding from a group that’s spearheading the Freedom Rock/veteran’s memorial project in Lake Park. The supervisors took no action on a request when they were originally presented with the proposal several weeks ago. The group that’s behind the project is requesting a $15,000 one time sum from the county. Ann Miller, Dickinson County Veteran’s Affairs Coordinator, presented the request this time around…(click here for comment.) “I talked to my commissioners and they are indeed in favor of it but they want everyone to know if the supervisors approve funds, they would like them added to our budget. They don’t want to take away from any programs or money that was set aside for other uses because we didn’t know about the Freedom Rock, and when we did find out about it we did not know it would be suggested to come through our department.”

A motion by supervisor Paul Johnson for the county to support the project failed for lack of a second.

Jim Kessler, who’s one of the project organizers, said it was crucial the county fund the project now in order for the freedom rock to be painted this coming September. He says the artist commissioned to do that is booked up and that they could be faced with a lengthy delay if they don’t have the funding in place by September 1st.
