Big Spirit Wastewater Discharge Has Public Health Officials On Lookout

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)—The recent discharge of wastewater into the southeast side of Big Spirit Lake has Dickinson County Public Health reminding the public to be aware of symptoms of E. coli infection. They include diarrhea, stomach cramps, chills, nausea and vomiting.

Dickinson County Public Health Manager Cyndi Powers says most symptoms start showing up three to four days after exposure but can start anywhere from 10 hours to 10 days after exposure.

Powers says anyone exhibiting such symptoms should contact their physician immediately. She says they should not go to work or school and don’t prepare food.

Powers adds E. coli is considered a reportable disease in the State of Iowa.

Officials say anyone who may have swam at Orleans Beach or anywhere else on the southeast side of Big Spirit Lake, where Wednesday’s spill occurred, should be on the lookout for any possible signs of E.coli exposure.
