(Forest City)– Winnebago Industries made it official Monday and announced it’s going to build a new plant in Charles City…where the company has existing facilities.
Construction of the new 204-thousand square foot facility, costing an estimated 12 and-a-half million dollars, is to start as soon as possible with production in the new plant starting by early next year.
Several local cities, including Spencer and Estherville, had been in the running for the new motor home manufacturing facility.
Spencer City Manager Dean Torresen tells KUOO news they felt very good about the proposal they presented to Winnebago officials. But he says the fact the company has an existing facility in Charles City weighed heavily in their decision.
Al Blum of the Estherville Industrial Development Corporation told KUOO news the fact that Charles City was designated by the state as an “enterprise zone” means they could offer a number of tax incentives that Estherville or Emmet county couldn’t provide.
