Wind Farm Proposed For Western Dickinson County

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A Storm Lake company wants to put up wind turbines in western Dickinson county.

Fred Tuckner of Clipper Windpower told the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors Tuesday they plan to construct 66 wind turbines in Lakeville and Excelsior townships. The company would purchase easements on the land where the turbines would be built.

Tuckner says the windfarm would generate about 100 megawatts of electricity that would be sold to MidAmerican Energy. Tuckner says they hope to have them operational in six months to a year from now.

Tuckner says he’s already visited with a number of farmers and landowners in the two townships and everyone he’s visited with so far is in favor of the proposed project.

Tuckner asked the board what the county’s zoning guidelines would be for the towers. Under the county’s zoning regulations, the towers are allowed in agriculturally zoned areas with special use permits. Tuckner indicated the company will probably start applying for the permits soon.
