West Okoboji Council Hears Concerns Over Terrace Park Beach

November 23, 2014

(West Okoboji)– Boating and swimming in the Iowa Great Lakes is probably the furthest thing in anyone’s mind right now with the coldest weather of the season here. But it was a topic of discussion at Monday’s West Okoboji City Council meeting. Mayor Howard Titterington read a letter from a person concerned over boats entering the swim area last summer at Terrace Park Beach. The letter also expressed concern over the appearance and cleanliness of a concession trailer at the beach. The letter writer called on the city to ban food sales on the beach. The council took no action on that matter, but they directed City Maintenance Worker Ed Rice to look into posting placards that say “no boats” on buoys and signs on the beach.

In other action, the council approved signing onto a 28E agreement re-establishing the Dickinson County Landfill Commission; approved an agreement with the Northwest Iowa Planning and Development Commission to complete a hazard mitigation plan for the city; and they decided to keep the city’s liability insurance at two million dollars. The council had been thinking about raising it to five million, but decided the additional premium the city would have to pay wouldn’t be worth it.

The council also approved a three percent salary increase for the City Clerk and Ed Rice for the upcoming year; and they approved the hiring of Nick Rice as a part-time maintenance worker.
