(Des Moines)– Iowa has its first deadly case of the West Nile Virus this year.
State health officials say an elderly Dickinson county resident died last month of the mosquito-borne virus.
Two other Iowans have been diagnosed with West Nile–a man from Clinton county and an elderly man from Crawford county. So far, six Iowans have been diagnosed with the illness this summer.
Deputy State Epidemiologist Doctor Aileen Buckler says this year’s first death is a reminder that West Nile is here to stay. She advises Iowans to take precautions against mosquitos.
Last year, 23 Iowans were diagnosed with the virus, including two deaths.
