Weekend Fire Damages Okoboji Apartment Building; No Injuries Reported

November 22, 2014

(Okoboji)– A weekend fire damaged an Okoboji apartment building, but firefighters say thankfully the occupants were able to get out unharmed and no injuries were reported.

Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire Chief Chris Yungbluth says his department was called around 11:15 a.m. Saturday to 1310 Lakeshore Drive Apartment 1 in Okoboji. Yungbluth says occupants in an apartment next to the one where the fire originated woke up when smoke detectors started going off and called 911. Upon arriving, firefighters found a back deck area and some siding on fire.

Neighbors and a police officer were able to contain that blaze using garden hoses, however Yungbluth says the fire did make its way into a small part of the apartment.

Yungbluth says a cause hasn’t been determined, but he says it appears to have been accidental in nature.

Damage to the apartment and its contents was estimated at between $5,000 and $10,000. Yungbluth says the tennants had renters insurance to help cover the costs of damaged property.

Yungbluth says the outcome of the fire likely would have been much worse if it hadn’t been for the working smoke detectors.

The Arnolds Park/Okobojji Fire Department was assisted by the Milford Fire Department.

Firefighters were on the scene about an hour-and-a-half.
