(Spirit Lake)– Spirit Lake police spent part of their morning Wednesday tracking down an injured deer in a part of town deer don’t often wander.
Officers were called to a report of a wounded deer on 23rd street near the little league fields around 8:00 a.m. The deer, which had apparently been struck by a vehicle, was badly injured, but still managed to elude officers, who were trying to lure it away from a residential area.
They were finally able to do that.
Police Chief Jon Martyr says the deer was so badly injured they had to put it down. Martyr says after they did that they discovered it was pregnant. A veterinarian and several others were called to the scene. A caesarian section was performed, but Martyr says it was too late-the fawn had already died. He says it was doubtful it would have made it anyway as it was very premature.
