Water Safety Council Emphasizes Need For Addresses On Dock Signs

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– The Iowa Great Lakes Water Safety Council is reminding dock owners of the importance of having proper signage at the end of their docks.

Phil Petersen of the Water Safety Council says the Department of Natural Resources’ signage requirements vary depending on whether or not a variance permit is needed for a dock. In instances where a permit is required, Petersen says a sign with the permit number must be posted on the dock. For those without variances, the signs must contain the owner’s name and address. Petersen encourages ALL dock owners to include that information to make it easier for rescuers and Lake Patrol officers arriving by water.

Petersen says there’s usually atleast one or two incidents each summer in which officers have a difficult time finding the location of an emergency because the address wasn’t posted on a dock.
