Water Quality Commission Awards Grants

(Spirit Lake)– Five projects designed to enhance water quality of the Iowa Great Lakes will share in 200-thousand dollars in funding in the latest round of grants awarded by the Dickinson County Water Quality Commission.

Agencies awarded funding include the Dickinson County Soil and Water Conservation District for the Iowa Great Lakes Watershed Assessment and Management Plan; the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation to assist in the purchase of land owned by Don and Nancy Yarns on the northeast side of Big Spirit Lake; the Spirit Lake Protective Association was awarded funding to assist in a drainage project in the Center Lake area; the Conservation Foundation of Dickinson County was awarded funds for a Naturalist Internship; and the Spirit Lake Protective Association was awarded a grant to assist with a commercial district storm water drainage project.

A total of 13 projects totaling 485-thousand dollars were submitted for funding in the 2007 fiscal year. The Water Quality Commission has 200-thousand dollars available to award each year.

The Dickinson County Water Quality Commission was established through a 28E Agreement between all the cities in Dickinson county and the board of supervisors.
