Warm, Dry Conditions Fuel Fire Threat

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The dry and abnormally warm conditions for this time of year are causing concern for area fire departments.

Firefighters battled several grass and leaf fires again over the weekend that got out of control.

One of those happened Sunday evening in the Francis Sites Area. Chief Wally Jorgenson says a leaf fire spread to a hollow tree…starting the inside of it on fire. There was concern over the possibility of the fire spreading when flames started coming through the top of the tree. Jorgenson says Spirit Lake firefighters were finally able to put out the blaze by cutting down the tree.

The fire was contained to the tree.
