(Spirit Lake)– A two-vehicle collision west of Spirit Lake late Thursday afternoon sent two people to the hospital.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says vehicles driven by 84-year-old Lubert Niessink of Rock Rapids and 49-year-old Daniel DeKoter of Spirit Lake collided at the intersection of Highways nine and 86, or Vick’s Corner.
Niessink and a passenger in the vehicle he was driving, his 82-year-old wife Tena, were both taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare. No injuries were reported to DeKoter.
Authorities say DeKoter had stopped at a stop sign and was proceeding into the intersection southbound when Lubert Niessink ran a westbound stop sign, colliding with DeKoter. Niessink was charged with failure to stop.
Eight thousand dollars in damage was estimated to a 1990 Cadillac driven by Niessink and to a 2002 Ford driven by DeKoter.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Spirit Lake Police Department, Spirit Lake Fire Department and the Lakes Area Extrication Unit, which was called to pry open a door on one of the vehicles.
The collision took place shortly after 3:30 p.m.
