Union Pacific Train Derails Near Sheldon

November 22, 2014

(Sheldon)– An investigation is under way into the cause of a train derailment early Sunday just north of Sheldon.

Mark Davis of the Union Pacific Railroad says 25 cars derailed shortly before 4:30 a.m. along Highway 60. Davis says the cars were in train bound from St. Paul, Minnesota to North Platte, Nebraska. He says the cars were hauling sand and soybean oil.

Crews spent the day Sunday and Sunday night cleaning up the mess. The clean-up continues this (Mon.) morning, and the track in that area has been temporarily closed. Rail traffic is being re-routed until about 450 feet of track that was ripped out in the derailment is repaired.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
